Diesel in a petrol car — or the other way round

The filling station on the way into Luton has seen this before, and so have we. If you have not started the engine, stop. If you have, stop anyway. We drain what we can and move the car if it will not drive. Do not ‘just pop it to the next roundabout’ to hide the embarrassment.

What that means on the ground

• Drain when the tank is the problem and the car has not been driven far
• Recovery if it has already been run and should not be driven another yard
• We ask the two questions that matter: what went in, and did it fire
• No lecture. It is a common call.
