Ampthill and Flitwick are the middle of MK45 and both are busier than their size suggests, with Flitwick's station pulling cars in from every village round it before seven in the morning.
The villages under the ridge — Sharpenhoe, Pulloxhill, Barton-le-Clay, Silsoe — sit on sandy, flinty ground, and the lanes between them wear their edges away every winter.
